The fellowship program accepts two candidates each year: one trained in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics, and one trained in Emergency Medicine.  Emergency Medicine fellows complete one clinical shift per week at O’Connor Hospital.

Both fellows gain extensive hands-on experience as team physicians caring for athletes across all levels of competition, including San José State University (NCAA Division I), San José City College, De Anza College, and Valley Christian High School. Training encompasses sports medicine and continuity clinics for patients of all ages, coverage of local marathons and triathlons, a one-month rotation at Palisades Tahoe ski area, monthly journal club, elective rotations, research opportunities, a structured didactic curriculum, and junior faculty experience teaching medical students and residents.

Fellows also receive in-depth training in diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, orthobiologics, and shockwave therapy. In addition, they collaborate with a physical therapy sports medicine resident during lectures, journal clubs, and clinical experiences at San José State University, creating a truly multidisciplinary approach to learning sports medicine.
